The Bible On Modesty

Okay – time to dive into the topic. My thoughts on the topic of modesty begin with the fact that the word modesty no longer communicates what it meant a hundred years ago and earlier. There are shades of the original meaning still lingering, but for the most part the original meaning is lost in our current understanding of that word. Modesty: 1531, "freedom from exaggeration, self-control," from M.Fr. modestie , from L. modestia "moderation," from modestus "moderate, keeping measure, sober," from modus "measure, manner." Meaning "having a moderate opinion of oneself" is from 1553. Modest (adj.) is first recorded 1565. Modern Language Association: Online Etymology Dictionary. Douglas Harper, Historian. 14 Mar. 2008. When the topic of modesty comes up in a youth group or a women’s bible study or a picnic table conversation, everyone’s thoughts immediately turn to clothing. This is somewhat odd since we still understand t

10 Worst Stereotypes About Powerful Women

“I’ve been in this field for more than 30 years,” said co-anchor of Today Ann Curry . “I’ve heard a lot of stereotypes.” Women continue climbing the rungs of power—building their ranks as heads of state, corporate leaders and media influencers—but their minority status means they still face harsh, limiting assessments based on their gender . “Women are being judged more, even by other women,” said Valerie Young, Ed.D., author of The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women . While male leaders are allowed to have complex personalities, powerful women are often summed up by hackneyed stereotypes that undermine them and their power. All You Have Is Your Integrity

Everyone knows right from wrong. Right? Wrong. People disagree about the definition of right and wrong all the time. That is why the topic of business ethics is currently front and center in the media and in office break rooms. When daily, the next Enron, Arthur Andersen, or WorldCom story hits the wires, it's difficult to ignore business ethics as an issue. And, as our world becomes more complex, sometimes the right answer, the one that meets the needs of the most stakeholders: employees, customers, potential employees, shareholders, and board members, lies somewhere in the middle. Business Ethics Challenges Think about these business ethics scenarios that happen in organizations every day. An employee surfs the Internet shopping for personal items on company time. A plant manager decides to ship product to a customer even though he knows the parts have a quality problem because the problem doesn't affect part function and the customer probably won't notice. An empl

Become A Learning Organization - Step 2

Here are twelve more tips about how to become a learning organization. Build individual development plans quarterly. These should list negotiated expectations for growth and learning over the quarter. These plans may include cross-training, skill stretching assignments, and representing the department at organization-wide meetings, as well as education. Put each person directly into contact with customers. When each individual personally knows customer needs, she is enabled to make better decisions to satisfy the customer. Remember also, the internal customers. Anyone to whom you provide a product or a service is a customer. Promote field trips to other organizations. Even organizations in different industries can provide opportunities for learning. See and learn what others are doing about the challenges you experience in your organization. I have found non-competing companies surprisingly gracious about sharing information. Meet regularly across departments, or in a small

Become A Learning Organization - Step 1

Begin with the Role of the Leaders Begin with the behavior and contribution of your leaders. Your leaders make four critical contributions to the development of a learning organization. Leaders provide the initial vision about why your organization exists and where you are going. They communicate this vision. They clearly communicate their belief that continuous growth, learning, and improvement will ensure its accomplishment. They build consensus and ownership around this vision, and are influenced by the views of others in the organization. They model the actions they want to develop in others. Their expectations are verbal, but most importantly, actions that others can see. Leaders who want a learning organization continually learn themselves. They read books and articles and share the content with the rest of the organization. They attend training sessions and conferences. They foster an environment in which people are empowered to make decisions about their work. They ma

Become A Learning Organization - Part 1

Organizations with the best chance to succeed and thrive in the future are learning organizations. In his landmark book, The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization ( Compare Prices) , Peter Senge defined the learning organization. He said they were “organizations where people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning how to learn together.” Senge frames our understanding of the learning organization with an ensemble of disciplines which he believes must converge to form a learning organization. I will briefly describe each of these dimensions so that we share a basic understanding of the components that create a learning organization. My main focus, however, is to suggest some ways in which you can promote a learning organization environment in your organization. These ideas will h

How To Get A Man To Respect You

To gain respect from a man, you must demonstrate that you respect yourself, and that you respect others. Self-confident people, with high self-esteem, will be less likely to be disrespectful relationship. According to the Mayo Clinic, people who have low self-esteem or a negative self-image will feel the negative impact in many parts of their life, including their relationships. By improving your self-esteem; your self-respect will increase, triggering more respect from a man.   Step 1 Reduce your negative thinking patterns. Start by making note of those patterns, the Mayo Clinic suggests. Notice whether you tend to dismiss the positives, and only remember the negatives. Take the time to challenge your negative thoughts, and replace them with positive ones. Keep doing this until you naturally begin to have positive thoughts. A positive thought process will increase your self-confidence and your feelings of worth.        Step 2 Avoid talking down to yourse
